Convert Lux to Watts

Our Lux to Watts Converter makes it easy to estimate the electrical power needed to achieve a certain light level in a given area.

Simply enter your illuminance in lux, area in square meters, and the luminous efficacy of your light source. The calculator will instantly show the lux to watts result and, optionally, the number of lamps needed.

Total electrical power required: W
How this works

Formula: Watts = (Lux × Area) ÷ Efficacy. Lux is lumens per square meter; efficacy is lumens per watt for your light source. This gives a simple estimate and ignores room/fixture losses.

How to Convert Lux to Watts?

To understand the calculation, you need to know what lux and watts measure:

  • Lux (lx): A measure of illuminance, or how much light hits a surface, in lumens per square meter.
  • Watt (W): A measure of electrical power consumption.

The lux to watts conversion formula is:

Watts = (Lux × Area) ÷ Luminous Efficacy

Where:

  • Lux is your target brightness level.
  • Area is in square meters.
  • Luminous efficacy is how many lumens your light source produces per watt (lm/W).

1 Lux is Equal to How Many Watts?

There is no fixed answer to this because the result depends on:

  1. The size of the area being lit.
  2. The efficiency of the light source.
For example, a highly efficient LED (100 lm/W) will need much less power than an incandescent bulb (15 lm/W) to achieve the same lux.
