How to Convert Amps to kVA Step by Step

The conversion depends on whether your system is single-phase or three-phase.

Single-Phase Amps to kVA Formula

kVA = (Amps × Volts) ÷ (1000 × Power Factor)

Three-Phase Amps to kVA Formula

kVA = (Amps × Volts × √3) ÷ (1000 × Power Factor)

Power factor (PF) represents how efficiently electrical power is used. Typical PF is 0.8 for most equipment.

Amps to kVA Conversion Examples

Example 1: Single Phase

A 20A device running at 240V with PF = 0.8

kVA = (20 × 240) ÷ (1000 × 0.8) = 6 kVA

Example 2: Three Phase

A 50A motor at 415V with PF = 0.85

kVA = (50 × 415 × √3) ÷ (1000 × 0.85) ≈ 42.3 kVA

20 A240 V6.0 kVA
25 A240 V7.5 kVA
50 A240 V15.0 kVA
80 A240 V24.0 kVA
100 A240 V30.0 kVA
200 A240 V60.0 kVA
300 A240 V90.0 kVA
800 A240 V240.0 kVA
1000 A240 V300.0 kVA
12V (Amp to kVA)12 V(Amps × 12) ÷ 800

Example:

  • 100A at 12V → 1.5 kVA
  • Formula is included so the user can calculate any 12V value.

Three-Phase (kVA = Amps × Volts × √3 ÷ (1000 × PF))

The most searched three-phase voltage is 415V, so the chart uses that.
