What is Safety Stock?

Safety stock is the extra inventory you keep in your warehouse to prevent stockouts. It acts as an insurance policy against unpredictable events. If a supplier is late or a product goes viral, safety stock keeps your business running.

Why Every Business Needs This Tool

Stockouts kill businesses. When you run out of items, you lose sales, hurt your search rankings on platforms like Amazon or Jumia, and frustrate customers. This calculator helps you balance two things:

  1. Customer Satisfaction: You always have items in stock.
  2. Reduced Costs: You don’t tie up too much cash in excess inventory.

The Safety Stock Formula

Our tool uses the industry-standard Heizer & Render formula. It compares your worst-case scenario against your average operations:

Safety Stock = (Max Lead Time × Max Usage) – (Avg Lead Time × Avg Usage)

How to Use the Safety Stock Calculator

To get an accurate result, you need four data points:

  • Max Lead Time: The longest time a supplier has ever taken to deliver.
  • Avg Lead Time: The typical time it takes to receive an order.
  • Max Daily Usage: Your highest number of units sold in a single day.
  • Avg Daily Usage: Your average daily sales volume.

Once you have your Safety Stock number, add it to your Lead Time Demand to find your Reorder Point (ROP). The ROP tells you exactly when to place a new order.
